Structural steels of yield strength up to 1100 MPa are commercial, but 690 MPa are actually the upper limit of grades focussed for offshore constructions. A survey on these steels is given by a plate mill experienced in the complete spectrum of producing high strength plates quenched and tempered, either TMCP-rolled either copper aged. Different strengthening mechanisms are used to achieve an appropriate balance between high strength, appropriate toughness and cost. A wide range of steel and chemical compositions can be offered matching a yield strength of 690 MPa. The selection of the most appropriate steel has to take into account the toughness requirements/design temperature, wall thickness and price. For very high toughness requirements, and CTOD requirements in the weld it may be difficult to select suitable welding consumables. Whilst the HAZ properties can be optimised by increasing the nickel and reducing carbon content, of the parent material the nickel content of ferritic weld metal is limited to 3 % because of solidification cracking, matching strength and toughness at the same time is not possible.
