The methods and results of an on-road study evaluating the 'Lateral Support System' (LSS) developed by FIAT are described. The LSS consists of two functions: The lane keeping support that warns the driver in case of an unintended crossing of the lane markings; and the blind spot function that warns the driver if an overtaking manoeuvre has been started and another vehicle is approaching from the side. 24 participants of the study drove 17 km on motorways in a car equipped with the LSS after having familiarised themselves with the car and with the system. An analysis of the questionnaires filled in by the drivers showed that the users rated the LSS as useful, satisfying and user-friendly, although there might be the risk of an over-reliance on the system. On the other hand, an analysis of the CAN-Bus data revealed that the frequency of the warnings was very high and that many 'false alarms' occurred that seemed to be ignored by the drivers. Furthermore, there were many system breakdowns. It is concluded that further technical development of the LSS is necessary to eliminate errors caused by reflections of sunlight into the cameras and to enable the detection of unusual road markings. In general, the LSS is mainly suitable for the use on motorways because its function is based on the detection of road markings. It has been demonstrated that the method of analysing the CAN-Bus data makes it possible to study the driver behaviour by means of analysing the vehicle data. Nevertheless, this method is very complex, time consuming, and requires special expertise. Therefore, it should be used only if special information about the system functioning is needed.
