Traditional pipeline intervention has been effectively used for many years. Although powerful in its use, the need to weld has always imposed safety constraints, which have forced operators to reduce operating pressures, or even purge the line to allow interventions to take place. The Grouted Tee technology from Advantica removes these constraints, as welding is no longer required. The main benefits of the Grouted Tee connections are: no welding or NDT to main pipeline; eliminate the need for skilled personnel; no need for pressure reduction and hence normal production can be maintained during hot tapping; simple field installation in comparison to the current welded or bolt on mechanical; it is independent to the main pipeline materials. Applications have included pipeline diameters ranging from 4'' to 48'' diameter with either equal tee or smaller bore take-off's. It is also suitable for thin walled pipelines with D/t ratios greater than 100. Work is under way to develop the design for low to medium pressure applications on cast and ductile cast iron pipelines and investigate long term application at higher temperatures.
