In the last years a substantial reduction of vehicle emissions has been achieved through the widespread diffusion of the Multipoint fuel electronic injection and 3-way catalyst technology for the gasoline engines and of the EGR recirculation and oxidising catalyst technology for the Diesel engines. An increasing pressure for a more substantial fuel consumption reduction is to be expected from both customer side and government side. The gasoline powertrain will keep on being the favourite propulsion system for passenger cars until 2010. The increasing demand for highest fuel economy vehicles will involve a progressive erosion of the gasoline engine market share from advanced DI diesel engines and at niche level from gas engines as well. In this paper, technologies for the gasoline powertrain, the gas powertrain, and the diesel powertrain are outlined. The gasoline engine future scenario sees a potential of CO2 emissions reduction by up to 16 % to 18 % with respect to the current state-of-the-art gasoline engines. This will be achieved by the integration of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) and Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technologies. There is no doubt that the use of natural gas for private, public and commercial transports will be strategic for the next 15 to 20 years. NG represents the only viable, real and effective solution for the reduction of pollution in towns. It is evident that the Diesel engine can remain a strategic product for Europe during the next decade, since the expected technological improvements are such to fulfill all the announced regulations.
