During the periodic motor vehicle inspection, the sideslip tester plays an important role as it enables the checkout of the wheels alignment. Nevertheless, the system has proven to be inaccurate as it is based on a displacement measure and doesn't consider the weight of the vehicle acting on the wheel. In this paper, the lateral force produced by the tyre on the test plate has been defined as the combination of the force produced by the position of the wheel in the space and the force produced by the tyre properties. Experimental data of wheel forces have been recorded by means of a force plate as a first attempt to evaluate the range of values obtained in this kind of test. The wheel models currently utilised are not applicable under these conditions of low speed and straight motion. In order to propose a more specific rejection criteria for the wheel alignment in the P.M.V.I, based on force measurement, a force plate has been specially designed for this purpose. A set of previous experimental results is published in order to demonstrate the feasibility of the new test procedure. An experimental study, with an extensive sample of cars, has to be carried out in order to compute the influence of the wheel angles and the tyre properties in the lateral force registered with the test plate. The wheel angles of each vehicle under test have to be measured previously by means of equipment based on digital imaging technology.
