Maritime risk assessment models are subject to the recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines on the Formal Safety Assessment of maritime transport. Such models have been developed in recent years to assess the level of safety in a maritime zone using a systematic approach. These models are now being applied to evaluate the impact (in a feedback loop) of certain measures adopted by the European Parliament in response to recent maritime disasters. The possibility is also being considered of using the concepts that underlie these models to assign an Individual Risk Index for Ships (IRIS) which help the representatives of coastal countries to detect in real time any vessel which presents a pollution.
