Despite the fact that not all details have been clarified, recent years have seen great advances, particularly as regards semi-finished products, corrosion protection and in drawing and joining technology for magnesium sheet materials. As a result, increasingly better quality sheets and an almost continuous processing chain are now available. The implementation of body add-on parts with outer sections has been started successfully and will be continued so that the full potential of the material can be understood. Within the context of making ultra-low fuel consumption feasible (1 litre-car), magnesium played an crucial role. Almost 38% of the entire mass was accounted for by magnesium cast parts and Mg sheets, respectively. The results from work to date facilitate the integration of the material magnesium in future lightweight body concepts considerably. The positive development can be continued only if the price of wrought Mg semi-finished products is lowered to a level which makes them attractive outside niche products. In the medium term, a maximum limit of approx. EUR 5/kg should be aimed for. This can be achieved only if manufacturers of semi-finished goods and potential users investigate potential applications together and work together on alternative solutions.
