This paper was first presented at Underwater Intervention 2003, the objective was to summarise digital video technologies and assess whether the technology and the market were sufficiently mature to enter into a long-term relationship with each other. The analogy of "marriage" seemed very appropriate when writing the original paper and it led to the title, "Digital Video; Anarchy in the UKCS." In this case, the term anarchy was used in its purest sense that being "the lack of any guiding principles." A recent review of digital video technology and the level of market acceptance in the offshore oil and gas sector, suggests that anarchy may have been replaced with apathy. While accepting that our industry is not in the best of health, 12 months have passed since the last piece of research and there is no clear sign of any progress, particularly with respect to the very necessary "guiding principles." At a seminar organised by the Hydrographic Society of Scotland in January 2003, the topic of digital video was debated at length. More than 100 delegates attended the half-day event and concluded: give me a black box digital video recorder to replace my VCR or do nothing until the digital equivalent of the VHS versus Betamax argument has been resolved.
