With intense competition in the foundry for better quality, the need for faster productivity and lower production cost is the main driver for optimisation of the aluminum wheel casting process. One of the most important process parameters in low pressure permanent mould casting (LPPM) is the pressurisation profile. In the present work, an improved pressurisation profile is calculated and simulated to effect casting cycle time and quality for an aluminium wheel casting. The improved pressurisation sequence comprises of 3 identifiable and distinct stages: stalk filling, cavity filling and intesification. Casting trials at argent Metals Technology demonstrated feasibility of a 40% reduction in the filling time of each cycle, and effectively, significant overall productivity gains of approximately 100.000 extra wheels per year for no additional capital expense. Also casting quality has been impacted due to a significant reduction in rim and junction shrinkage.
