The main contribution resulting from applying object-oriented modelling to the design of railway safety-related systems can be seen as follows: creates a sound and efficient environment for communication of team members working over the project (modularity); simplifies the design process of SW (the development process reduces the overall software engineering development time); supports specifications that are independent of particular programming languages and development processes; specifications are readable and understandable for other subjects involved in the process of safety assessment and evaluation; Unifies principles and procedures used to create documentation for electronic safety-related systems (with possibility of automatic document generation); maintenance of models as the project progresses is far easier than in the case of simple drawings. Within conclusions let's also remark that UML based tools have checking mechanisms implemented that allow selecting checks to be performed on the model or on a part of the model. The process of checking the functional correctness can also be supported by design of animation model of the system under development. UML approach is specifically suitable for functional requirements specifications and software development for safety-related systems and is accepted by responsible Safety Authorities. The UML model presented in the paper was realised with the use of the Rhapsody environment and based on UML. Diagrams included in the paper were redrawn using the word processor to get better readability. Due to restricted extent of the paper only several parts of selected diagrams have been chosen and discussed in details. The paper is based on experience of the authors resulting from long-term solution of object-oriented development of electronic safety-related system for railway applications.
