The Al/Al2O3 FGM composed of a dense alpha-Al203 layer and seven gradient intermediate layers was successfully fabricated from starting materials consisting of aluminum and Al(OH)3 powders by employing a temperature gradient PCPS process with a copper spacer, at a pressure of 49 MPa , and with the short sintering time of 900 sec. The optained results can be summarized as follows: (1) A high temperature of about 1800 K was generated in the upper part of the punch by employing the temperature gradient PCPS process using a copper spacer. At the bottom layer, the aluminum powder compact reached about 870 K, and at the top layer, the alpha-AlO3 powder compact reached about 1800 K. A temperature gradient of about 900 K was successfully obtained. (2) The temperature of a transformation was successfully lowered by about 300 K using Al(OH)3 powder with the addition of 20 mass % of ultrafine alpha-Al2O3 seeds. A planetary ball mill was effective in dispersing alpha-Al203 seeds homogeneously and milling them into smaller particles. (3) The hardness of the aluminium layer was about 25 HV. The hardness of intemiediate layers gradually increased as the volume fraction of gamma-Al2O3 increased. The top layer, which consists of dense alpha-Al2O3, was about 1000 HV on average, and the top surface of the specimen reached 1500 HV.
