Automatic mechanical transmission (AMT) system is a kind of high and new technology product which is paid much attention to in the vehicle industry nowadays. Electrically controllable clutch is an important functional module in AMT system. In this paper, a nonlinear dynamic model of hydraulic actuator associated with clutch of AMT vehicle has been established. Furthermore, a nonlinear controller has been proposed by combining exact feedback linearization control algorithm with sliding mode control algorithm. This method not only makes the structure of the controller simple but also makes robustness of controller good, so it is very suitable for the control of the actuator of clutch. The experimental results on a Santana LX passenger car indicate that this method is of good tracking accuracy and strong robustness. This method is expected to be increasingly applied in many fields. In fact, for different nonlinear systems as long as they satisfy theorem 1, it is easy to obtain good control quality by using sliding mode control approach based on the feedback linearization
