Based on the analysis of non-linear characteristics of automotive suspension system a quarter-automotive suspension model is adopted in this paper. In order to study and obtain a control strategy for non-linear vibration system of an automotive semi-active suspension, an output-perturbation-uncoupled method is applied with differential geometry theory. The non-linear model of the semi-active suspension is transferred to be a simple linear system by an appropriate coordinate transform. Then the optimal control scheme is applied to the simple system and carried out control to the original system through a non-linear state feedback. So in semi-active suspensions, damper force is controlled as close to the desired damper force as possible at any time instance. Finally, compared with an active suspension and a conventional passive suspension, respectively, the simulation results indicated that the non-linear control strategy is more feasible in allusion to the existing elements of semi-active suspensions with non-linear characteristics. So this control strategy not only can attain an excellent effect on weakening vehicle vibration and disturbance, but also coincide with the practical condition. It is also shown that the suspension system is superior to the passive suspensions in improving ride quality.
