Electronic control units (ECUs) in automotive applications are rapidly increasing performance and complexity. New control units like the inverter controller for crank shaft starter/generator, eventually combined with additional functions will require new methods for diagnosis and testing. Compact Dynamics developed a new software and hardware interface for high speed data exchange (up to 6 MByte/s). The new solution can display a group of data recursively with short duty cycle like an oscilloscope or transfer a big block of data, internally recorded by an event in very short time. As the power control units must operate with high currents, the hardware interface is designed around an Ethernet interface to prevent 'ground shift' problems due to measurement interface. The main requirements for the software in the measurement adapter was to transfer data with high rate. The author chose the XCP-protocol to keep advantages of the existing CAN calibration protocol (CCP) and to add new features for higher data speed and amount. Due to the extensive software he decided to use a real time operating system. To keep amount of memory low, the author developed a solution to bring operating system and hard real-time requirements of the data transfer together. The control units connected to the measurement adapter have different interfaces. The author found a common solution to connect them to the measurement adapter. An additional requirement to add only minimal overhead in the control units software and to keep additional resource requirements as low as possible. With this new measurement environment the author sees a chance to integrate the measurement interface into the ECU and easily adapt it to an series ECU.
