Vehicles developed at present contain an increasing number of embedded systems. Especially comfort functions like central door locking, electrical window lift, sliding roof and setting of mirror which were realized without any software components still few years ago are controlled by distributed micro controllers today. The communication between the electronic control units (ECU) takes place via specific buses like CAN, LIN or TTP/C. Through demands on modern comfort systems becoming more sophisticated and applying of distributed systems communicating via busses, the complexity of software increases rapidly so that traditional development methods are often not sufficient any more. In order to structure, improve and speed up the software development process in the automotive area, specific methods and tools (requirement tools, modelling tools, code generators, etc.) from software engineering are used. In a case study of the current STEP-X project, it was evaluated to what extent specific tools can be used in order to make a simulatable and practicable model from a text based specification. Qualities of the model were analysed with formal methods regarding correctness in respect to the requirements. For this purpose, the authors translated a STATEMATE model of the system manually to the input language of the real-time model-checker UPPAAL. The authors give an outline how this translation can be automated.
