One major potential for aerodynamic optimisations has already been identified in the cooling air flow. By controlling the volume flow through the engine compartment and the radiator by means of a cooling air jalousie, a reduction of the cooling air drag resulting in consumption savings up to 3.8 percent under certain operating conditions is possible. Although there is some progress with CFD on underhood region flows, the experimental investigations are still dominating. In the following, some knowledge gained in the past of the interaction between external and internal flows in vehicle aerodynamics will be summarised. Emphasis is put on new ground simulation techniques. Today's aerodynamic developments find themselves facing conflicts by achieving the aims of acoustics, design, cooling performance, and of course aerodynamic properties. While acoustics is important for comfort reasons and the aerodynamic properties take influence on the driveability of the car as well as on the energy consumption, cooling performance must always be guaranteed. By presenting experimental results with moving ground and rotating wheels in comparison to standard ground simulation techniques, it becomes obvious why and how advanced ground simulation techniques take a major effect on the cooling air flow. The dependencies between the aerodynamic quantities and cooling airflow are stated by considerations of energy and moment um equations and by presenting measurements concerning underfloor engine compartment encapsulations. The indispensableness of the new ground simulation techniques is pointed out on the basis of state of the art cooling systems realised in production cars.
