Under inflated tires are the number three reason for car breakdowns: almost 20 % of the cars driving with at least one under inflated tire, thus reducing its life time and increasing fuel consumption, stopping distance as well as the potential of hydro planning. Even without the series of accidents, which finally led to the US TREAD act tire pressure monitoring systems will help to overcome the above mentioned drawbacks. The US legislation defines the step by step introduction of TPM systems and allows for two solutions to be implemented, as the direct systems, taking the rotational speed information of the antilock brake system to detect differences in tire pressure and second direct systems, which are directly located in the tire cavity, measuring the pressure exactly and transmitting it via RF to a central unit. This paper gives an overview on the state of art for actual and future TPM.
