Autonomous GPS receivers combined with a terrestrial data exchange system, so-called telematics systems, are found in a large variety of land transport applications. The technology is nearly mature in road-based transport, i.e. car, truck and cargo traffic. The railway sector was more reluctant in the past, but today is more and more convinced about the advantages of this technology, and requests arise to make profit of the telematics technology in railway transport. Kayser-Threde is successfully involved for a couple of years in the - less demanding - fleet management, wagon tracking and positive train control business and provides low-tost systems (NavMasterTm) for those purposes. Since 2000, efforts have been intensified to find also solutions for the more pretentious signaling and train control sector, thus to cover safety-related and/or highprecision applications. In this area it is required to group complementary sensors (e.g. accelerometers, digital track maps) and/or alternative communication components (e.g. satcom) around the GPS receiver. At present, three prototype systems with different core features are under development at Kayser-Threde: RadioCompass, Integrail and ARTES. The positioning accuracy is between 1 and 10 m. Due to complementary positioning and attitude sensors, the availability is close to 100%. Moreover, the integrity of the positioning solution is specified to be close to 100% under predefined conditions, as this is an essential pre-requisite for future certified use in rail signaling. For remote operation of these systems a central monitoring and command facility, which is accessible through LAN and Internet, complements the train-borne mobile units. The paper reports about the current status of development, testing, achieved performance and individual benefits of these new prototype systems. Main focus is set on the variable applicability in railway telematics and related sectors, in particular safety-related and high-precision applications.
