Research such as three-dimensional numerical analysis and experimental analysis have been carried out for the improvement of the inside flow characteristics of the torque converter. However, for further improvement of the fuel saving performance of automobiles, introduction of advanced control technologies is necessary. As part of the improvement of operating performance, the pressure distribution on the surface of the lock-up piston (L/P) and the motions of L/P were measured and some countermeasures were taken using the measurement results. However, sufficient improvement for the response of the lock-up operation have not been attained. In this study visualization of the flow field around the L/P structured inside of an automotive torque converter was carried out using particle image velocimetry (PIV) under various conditions to clarify the influences of the flow behavior of the working fluid on the lock-up operation. A quantitative analysis is presented in this paper. The conclusions can be summarized as follows: 1. With application of PIV, the flow velocity distribution on the surface of the L/P and those in the small gap could be measured. 2. The radial component of the flow velocity on the surface of the friction material increased with increase of the speed ratio and with decrease of the gap. 3. It can be said, that the pressure in Section A becomes higher than the one in Section B due to the flow velocity difference, and this pressure difference makes the response of the lock-up operation worse toward the coasting drive side.
