Within heat management systems, variable coolant pumps play a decisive role. They contribute additional benefits towards thermally efficient engine operation, besides they increase heating comfort. Considerable improvements with variable pumps have been found looking to emissions and fuel consumption at cold start, temperature rise at partial load, delivery flow meeting the demand at full load. An overall potential in fuel saving in the range of 2 to 5 % seems to be proven. Up to now, however, the market entry of electrical coolant pumps does not correspond to that positive scenario. Reasons can be found primarily in considerable extra costs against mechanical pumps of today. Another hurdle still is a not sufficient availability of electrical power with 14 V, especially if pressure losses in the cooling circuit cannot be reduced. Finally, application of electric pumps means a problem itself because of the space requirements. GPM, having been involved in development and production of mechanical coolant pumps for many years has reacted to that challenge with different innovative concepts for variable pumps. The mechanically driven on/off pump, which is fully compatible with existing cooling circuits can be operated with 14 V. The electrically axial pump shows the best power to weight ratio in the benchmark and has a good cost potential. The coolant distributor pump finally is the concept for the future. It combines the functions of pump and distributor valve, thus optimising customer benefits.
