Tunnel Ventilation Systems (TVS) are provided in both railway tunnels and road tunnels to maintain a comfortable and safe environment for tunnel users and tunnel equipment to enable reliable and efficient operation. In these tunnels, TVS are designed to cater for normal, congestion and fire emergency operations. Even though the design bases are similar, there are differences in the approaches in designing the TVS for these different types of tunnels. This paper presents the considerations and the design processes in selecting suitable TVS schemes for railway tunnels and road tunnels. Due to the differences in their physical geometry and operational requirements, the design criteria, design approaches, control / monitoring strategy, selection of equipment, etc., will vary. As a result, the TVS schemes for the two types of tunnels will be different. In general, there are three main types of TVS schemes. They are (1) longitudinal ventilation system, (2) sem-transverse ventilation system and (3) fully / partial transverse ventilation system. The selection criteria include the consideration of initial cost, operation cost, maintenance, evacuation strategy, etc. In the paper, the selection of a suitable TVS scheme for railway tunnels and road tunnels will be discussed. For longitudinal ventilation system, it can be achieved by using (1) Saccardo Nozzle System or (2) Jet Fan System or (3) Impulse Fan System. There are also different considerations on these ventilation options for railway tunnels and road tunnels. Issues related to safety, life cycle cost as well as maintenance are addressed in the paper.
