This paper outlines continuing work being conducted in enhancing the damage tolerance aspects of primary aircraft structures. The programme of work has shown how uniaxially loaded stiffened panels can be compared to a wingbox structure loaded in bending. Following a brief introduction, a series of experimental tests are detailed that have enabled an investigation into the benefits of through thickness reinforcement, in the form of Z-pins. This work has shown that Z-pins must be considered as a part of the structural design, in that they may enhance structural stiffness in structures subjected to high strains. Z-pins within this programme are considered for the control of delamination and their location with respect to impact damage is discussed.
