Anyone who has ever driven a car is already familiar with that uncertain feeling one gets, when he or she is forced to park the vehicle at an uphill grade during an Alpine holiday. A gear is engaged, the front wheels are turned towards the curbstone and stones are even placed under the wheels of the car. In this paper the implementation and the specifications of a new electric parking brake are described. Probably the most crucial specification is the requirement concerning the parking of a fully loaded vehicle at a hill with an 8% gradient, in the event of a failure of the parking brake system (excluding the power supply). In accordance with ECE 13 the parking brake must be independent of the service brake; in the TRW-System, this is achieved through a movable spindle nut in the brake piston. This means that the parking brake still overrides the service brake. The implementation of dynamic braking was part of the specification. Probably the most pleasant function of the electric parking brake is the automatic release during drive-off. The required engine torque is determined through the integrated inclination sensor and the brake is released upon reaching this threshold. If the information about the imminent clutch engagement process is available to the system, i.e. through monitoring of the clutch pedal speed, a completely jerk- free drive-off can also be attained with a manual transmission. Vehicles with automatic and semi-automatic transmissions will hardly have a problem here; the toque characteristic is dependent on the actuation of the accelerator pedal. Even vehicles with automatic transmissions already roll back when driving uphill grades (12%) due to constantly lower creeping torques. If the parking brake is not used, vehicles with semi- automatic transmissions will generally roll back during shifting. These vehicles will also derive considerable benefit from the drive-away assistant function.
