Two years ago Zeon Corporation introduced a new family of heat resistant acrylic (ACM) polymers. This new family of polymers exhibits improved long term heat resistance in comparison to the more traditional grades of ACM and this has already been successfully demonstrated in engine applications such as seals, valve cover and oil pan gaskets. Additional applications that could benefit from improved heat resistance include hose and air ducts. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that new heat resistant ACM polymers can be formulated to meet the demanding processing requirements of hoses and air ducts whilst delivering both the high and low temperature performance as required and specified by all automotive manufacturers. It has been demonstrated that compounds based on ACM AR112 and ACM AR22 have excellent heat resistance. ACM can be compounded to meet requirements of -40 deg C to 175 deg C. Blending ACM AR12 or ACM AR22 with ACM AR14 results in compounds with good heat resistance and excellent low-temperature flexibility without plasticiser. The addition of low temperature plasticiser to ACM AR 12 and AR22 results in compounds with excellent low-temperature flexibility (-35 deg C )and excellent heat resistance (162 deg C capable). Users have options to achieve a balance of good low-temperature performance with good heat resistance by blending the new ACM polymers, or by the addition of plasticiser - or both. ACM compounds have equivalent tensile strength to that of AEM compounds when measured at typical in-service temperatures of 150 deg C. ACM compounds compare favourably with AEM compounds with respect to heat resistance. ACM AR14 based compounds have equivalent heat resistance to AEM compounds with better low-temperature performance. ACM compounds can be processed by extrusion and the use of suggested process aids is recommended.
