The American company 'Batesville Tool & Die' operates in metal stamping and produces parts for automotive customers. Besides stamping, the company performs prototyping as well as gas-metal-arc and resistance welding. Hot- and cold-rolled steels, some coated, are the materials of choice along with stainless grades and brass alloy. During assembly of new presses in 1990 it was decided to supply a complete automated conveyor system to transport scrap from below the new added presses and up into one of two new scrap trailers. The scrap-transfer system, to handle 7800 lb.l hour, includes an oscillating-conveyor line stretching 116 ft. under the presses, quietly transporting scrap via vibration horizontally to a system (Prab-Scrapveyor II), which carries the scrap up a 35-deg. incline past floor level to the raised shuttle-conveyor scrap-distribution system. The shuttle conveyor is equipped with two diverter chutes to direct scrap to one of two scrap trailers, automatically switching over and notifying employees when one trailer is full. The entire system accepts scrap from four independently operated presses arranged in a line. The system includes sensors to monitor scrap levels in the trailers and a programmable control system to monitor and run all scrap-system components. System control is interlocked with the press controls to assure that the scrap system operates when the presses are on. With the conveyor system installed, Batesville T&D became one of the first companies to employ the newly designed Scrapveyor II, which has less than half the moving parts of a hinged belt conveyor. As an further advantage of the automated conveyor it is mentioned, that the system reduces travel time in transporting scrap and prevents scrap pieces and lube oil form littering the shop floor.
