Safety problems seem set to intensify for present high speed traffic systems in OECD countries. Road fatalities have generally fallen in recent decades, but non-fatal injuries and non-injury collisions have shown modest, if any, improvement. Some important safety measures may also be nearing their limits of effectiveness. Further reduction in crash severity and frequency will be hampered by probable changes to the car-driving population, car weight, and share of nonmotorized travel. Distraction from the driving task could also increase in parallel with in-vehicle telematics use. Use of the new information technology is increasingly seen as a solution to the road safety problem. The information collected by the various sensors could be of great use in improving conventional vehicle crash protection, for example by checking simulations and crash tests against reality. However, motorists involved in crashes may be unwilling to share crash-relevant 'black box' information, which may hold back their market acceptance. It is argued here that although the new technology has a key role to play in improving road transport generally, and could be very useful in crash protection, it will be of less help in reducing collision frequency. Drivers will use any decrease in workload for other purposes, which would lower their situation awareness in an emergency requiring human intervention. Overall, IT for crash avoidance will need to be introduced carefully.
