Recycling of automobile using grinding process also generates fine particles which contain plastic and metallic materials such als Chromium, lead, iron, copper and zinc among some of are toxic at low concentration. There is a processing method successfully developed adequate to transform metal ion from fine particles of automobile shredder residues (ASR) into new products for beneficial reuse using phosphates and thermal treatment (calcination). Minerals can be recycled if they are non-hazardous. Heavy metal stabilisation, i.e. conversion of trace metal ions into insoluble, stable and non-leachable compounds is a key step for the process. This process can successfully transform the solid waste containing heavy metals into environment friendly products. The results obtained from both the incinerator fly ash and automobile shredder residues (ASRs) show that the calcination of the chemically treated waste gives solid residues containing apatite-like insoluble metal phosphates and help significantly to modify the properties of final residues such as specific surface, density, hardness and leachability of pollutants. The Revasol which is a demonstation project by Solvay lead to re-use the stabilised materials in road construction. For this reason, the stabilisation of heavy metals with phosphoric acid from ASR would represent a promising way to re-use these residues.
