The objective of the study was to determine the effect of the fractional composition on the stability of the fuel oil fraction (HRGO) obtained from the hydrotreating of vacuum residue. The colour stability of five-grade narrow fractions (distilled from fuel oil fraction) was investigated during 6-month of storage. It was found that the stability of the product was affected by the narrow fractions with boiling point above 355 deg C. Particulate fallout was concomitant with the presence of fraction with a boiling range of 360 - 370 deg C. The addition of stabilisers did not significantly inhibit colour degradation of fraction greater than 370 deg C during storage. The end boiling point of fuel oil fraction obtained form the hydrotreating of vacuum residue must not exceed 370 deg C. The experiments revealed that alkyl tertiary amine used as stabiliser inhibited the colour degradation of investigated fractions to a greater extent than did alkyl primary amine. Both the stabilisers prevent particulate fallout.
