Vehicles used almost exclusively for short-distance driving can develop starting problems related to the formation of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, which can cause existing deposits to flake. When the vehicle is started, flakes can become wedged between the exhaust valve and valve seat ring. These hard pieces of carbon can stop the valve from closing, leading to a loss of compression, and prevent the engine from restarting. Two possible solutions to this problem have been developed; an aftermarket solution is which a high performance additive is added to the fuel tank during the vehicle service to solve an existing problem and delay the onset of a recurrence, and a bulk treatment solution, in which the same additive is used at a normal bulk dose as a deposit-control additive in market fuels to prevent the problem from occurring.
