A challenge of designing a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is that the HEV should possess uniform driving traits as traditional vehicles do, thus making the driver maintain a uniform driving habit. This requires that the control strategies can identify the driver's driving purpose correctly and duly. In this paper, the writer introduces the conception of velocity-acceleration pedal position curve (VAPP curve). The curve traces the actual speed and the pedal positions changing with the time. Based on the VAPP curve shape, such driving purposes as steady speed, acceleration, deceleration and free sliding can be identified. The whole driving process, according to the structure of the selected HEV, is divided into several individual operating modes: start-up and low-speed, medium-speed, high-speed, fast acceleration, slow accelerating and free sliding. Each of them matches a simple driving mode. The HEV can be relatively independently driven in each mode, and enter another mode when satisfying certain conditions.
