Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) are the primary method for transport of goods in the UK. Efforts have been made to reduce the polluting emissions, and improve the efficiency and safety of these vehicles across Europe and elsewhere. However, while Hybrid and pure Electric Vehicle (HEV and EV) technologies have had an initial impact on passenger vehicles, examination of hybrid heavy commercial vehicles has been limited. In order to develop hybrid HGVs in a cost effective manner, a greater understanding, of the vehicle's ability to meet the duty cycle requirements with variations in the powertrain, is required. The paper discusses the requirements of a hybrid powertrain for a 7.5 tonne commercial vehicle, operating on an urban / suburban delivery duty cycle. Computer based simulation is used to compare the performance of various configurations, with the Energy Storage Device (ESD) and control strategy optimized in favor of energy delivery, power delivery or electric assist. The performance results show that each type of duty cycle demands custom optimization of the hybrid configuration, but in each case the polluting emissions, of NO/NO2 and particulate, can be relocated away from urban environments, and fuel consumption/CO2 emission can be reduced overall. There is also wide variation in the cost of such optimization, predominantly due to the energy storage device price.
