This paper presents a new concept of integration for powering the Motor Wheel (MW) of a Hybrid Vehicle. For packaging, efficiency and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) reasons, the inverter, the decoupling and filtering capacitors, the inverter drivers and the current sensors have been integrated into the MW. Along with the power density, the thermal management and efficiency issues have to be addressed. In order to improve the power density, the decoupling capacitors have been included into the integrated power inverter (IPI) module to eliminate the need for snubbing. The top cover and the base plate act as a shorted secondary of the transformer which reduces the inductance creating the over voltage. It is possible to design a very effcient power inverter with today's semiconductor technology but in our case it has to be very robust as the wheel is exposed to extreme environmental conditions and vibrations . The cooling of the IPI module is made through the same efficient cooling system used for the MW. The integration of the decoupling capacitors inside the IPI module allows the use of higher voltage energy sources, which reduces the current associated with losses in the inverter. A brief description of the MW and an overview of the whole electric system are presented below. A systematic method to choose the semi-conductor as well as the gate drive and control will also be presented. This paper demonstrates the advantages of incorporating the decoupling capacitors inside the module in terms of efficiency and noise. A new IPI Modules, developed by Technologies M4 (TM4), which deals with thermal management, packaging and component integration is presented. Simulations and practical results will show the effectiveness of the packaging resulting in less oscillation across the inverter leg and low power losses.
