Interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) can be applied to electric vehicle (EV) drive requiring high torque -current-ratio and wide-speed operation. In this paper, a whole IPMSM vector control strategy on the basis of stator current optimization is offered with oil gate voltage value proportional to the amplitude of armature current vector.Under the base speed, the control scheme incorporates an off-line tested table to provide the maximum torque with given oil gate. In the table, both the effect of d-axis inductance and that of flux saturation are considered to give the proper d-axis current (id) and the q-axis (iq) one. A novel flux-weakening method is implemented based on an outer voltage PI regulation loop to prevent saturation of the current PI regulator. So over the base speed, full utilization of DC bus voltage and the maximum power output can be realized with given armature current vector amplitude. Experimental results at various operating conditions are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed control scheme. Compared with the id = 0 control, the motor can offer more torque in the constant torque range. And as the saturation factor is considered, more torque-current-ratio can be achieved in that range when the load is fairly light. With the outer voltage loop, the conversion between the constant torque range and the flux-weakening one is rather smooth, and the constant power output can be realized.
