Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a worldwide phenomenon happening in many coastal areas. Where such discharge is a solute input between land and sea it presents a danger of coastal pollution and land eutrophication. In some cases where the water is fresh the seeps cause a substantial loss of drinking water. In some areas submarine freshwater aquifers could be used as a substitute for land aquifers. SGD is difficult to identify, locate and quantify. An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) survey is reported here that may act as a reference in what is essentially a new form of survey. The conclusion is that the AUV in combination with acoustic mapping and oceanographic sensing is a suitable method to use for the identification, location and sizing of SGD.
