Recorders for collecting data on the acceleration, vehicle velocity etc., at the time of traffic accidents have been researched and developed around the world with the aim of collecting accident data and thus improving vehicle safety. These recorders are called 'drive-recorder' in Japan, 'Event Data Recorder (EDR)' in the US, and 'accident data recorder' in Germany, and each country adopts a different approach. The US plans to mount EDR in new cars and has added EDR functions to On-Board-Diagnostics (OBD). The EDR collect data on the vehicle speed, engine speed, throttle position, and on/off state of the brake for the 5 seconds before crash at 1 Hz and collect data of the ignition cycle, the use of seat belts, the seating information of the passengers, the state of the air bag alarm lamps, the velocity changes, etc. This paper explains a method of estimating the acceleration of the center of gravity and the trajectory of the vehicle by a drive recorder which records accident data at the time of a traffic accident. Three coordinate systems were defined: vehicle coordinate system, moving ground coordinate system, and earth coordinate sysem; then, solutions were obtained by using a positional vector and directional cosine matrix. The drive-recorder data were compared with the data of crash tests and verified that the drive-recorder captured the vehicle trajectory at the time of crash. The analytical method described in this paper is useful for collecting accurate accident data by drive-recorders and for providing accident information in accident notification systems.
