The implementation of the new electronic equipment makes the electrical and electronic architecture more and more complex. Thus technologies such as Power Line Communication constitute alternative solutions to reduce the number of wires and optimize the harness. This paper deals with the essential parameters to be identified in order to provide the appropriate power line modulation. Harness EMC behavior and EMI disturbances inside vehicle are developed in this paper. Power line communication is potentially an optimized way to transport data. Lots of parameters have to be identified in order to determine the feasibility of this technology on board vehicle. A system approach is necessary to ensure a complete comprehension of the difficulties to be overcome. Simulation based on measurement is needed to identify the behavior of harnesses as well as the impact of disturbances. Different types of modulations have to be compared to make the best choice. Depending on the results of simulation and on other parameters such as data rate and protocol constraints, the power line communication can be implemented inside the vehicle. There is not a unique modulation for all applications. Power line communication can be used either as nominal communication layer or as redundant safety way to transmit data. This new technology, which offers substantial earnings, has to be taken into account at the very beginning of a new harness design. System approach is necessary to evaluate technically and economically the power line communication technology.
