This paper describes the newly introduced Flat-Trac LTR (light truck/racing) tire performance test system designed for light truck and racing tires being in operation at Bridgestone's Tokyo technical centre since July 2002. Test results are presented to show that the Flat-Trac LTR provides increased capability beyond the conventional Flat-Trac III CT (cornering and traction) system. Testing of high performance race tires is also exceeding the lateral force limits of earlier Flat-Trac systems due to the high friction coefficients compared to conventional production tires. It uses the same kinematics and geometry as all previous Flat-Trac systems and is designed to have the roadway installed at floor level to facilitate tire loading. This capability typically allows for measuring a drag force versus speed curve. However, for tire testing it is more convenient to indicate the maximum slip angle versus roadway speed for different lateral force levels delivering an easier interpretation of whether the system is capable of running a particular tire test. Testing at large slip angles required more load capacity in the tire test system and it was learned that tire oscillations could break out as the tire sweeps through slip angles beyond 10 degrees producing lateral forces at high frequencies with peak forces well above the computed friction limit of the tire. The system measures spindle forces and moments using a multi-axial transducer. A hydraulic spindle drive motor is installed above the tire and is connected to the spindle via a gearbox and torque cell to control wheel torque. The spindle drive is designed to be easily connected or disconnected without complete removal of the assembly as was required on previous Flat-Trac system designs. The results show that the Flat-Trac LTR system meets the objectives for which the system was designed and that it provides a useful tool to measure the force and moment properties of light truck and racing tires.
