This paper presents the progress of an ongoing corrosion study of vehicle microenvironments. The study identifies the difference of corrosion microenvironments at various automotive proving grounds, using a sensor-equipped vehicle. A vehicle was instrumented for the proving ground test study. Various types of environmental sensors were installed at more than thirty-five sites on the vehicle. These sensors measured the temperature and relative humidity of the ambient air, and the temperature and time-of-wetness of the sites surfaces. Cold rolled steel (CRS) and zinc (Zn) corrosion rate sensors were also used in the experiments. Proving ground test I has two phases or cycles, each cycle lasting 7-days. Cycle 1 and cycle 2 are alternated each week throughout duration of the test. Test events at proving ground II consists of grit trough, salt splash/mist, gravel road, high-speed road, environmental chamber, and ambient storage. Proving ground test III consists of a series of driving cycles on various road surfaces, braking stops, salt spray, and high temperature/high humidity soaking periods. This work shows that it is possible to quantitatively measure differences in environmental conditions at distinct locations (microenvironments such as underbody, door inner structure, underhood) on a vehicle. Furthermore, this work demonstrates that microenvironments have a considerable effect on corrosion rates. Finally, this work presents a method for comparing the severity of proving ground tests. Future work, then, will focus on correlating accelerated test conditions with real world usage profiles, in oder to improve the correlation between the two.
