A comprehensive study has been conducted for the new DP500 dual phase steel. The new steel grade has been proven to have the following advantages over the current steels for the exposed outer body panels: 1. Excellent dent resistance. It has been shown that the dent resistance is approximately 35 % better than BH210. 2. Better fatigue strength than BH210. 3. Good formability. With proper draw die and process design, the steel can be used to form outer body panels without major forming problems. 4. Good weldability. With proper practices, EG DP500 can meet the weldability requirements of automotive companies. 5. Customer value. As such, DP500 provides the opportunity for improved customer satisfaction, reduced warranty claims, reduced in-plant damage, vehicle weight reduction, and cost savings.
