At present, most ships are stabilized for roll using active fins controlled by a PID (Proportional plus Integrating plus Derivating) controller developed using classical control theory and these appear perfectly adequate for most warships. However, what is not known is how the choice of controller for a fin-stabilization system affects the operational performance of the ship. The potential improvements in the ability of a warship to perform an anti-submarine warfare mission in the North Atlantic is presented when using different control strategies for fin-roll stabilization. Also included is an assessment of the potential benefits to operational performance of an integrated fin rudder roll stabilization system.
