Ferritic stainless steel gas metal arc welding (GMAW) wires have been widely using for automotive exhaust system components made of ferritic stainless steels. In order to enhance the high temperature strength of weld metal, it is necessary to make the microstructure of weld metal finer. In this study, the effect of minor alloying elements on refining of weld metal of ferritic stainless steel was investigated. Following conclusions were obtained: 1. Authors ascertained that a combination of 0.08% Ti, 0.04% AI and 0.1% N is optimal to refine grains through inducing in the weld metal the numerous fine rectangular titanium and aluminun nitrides 0.3-0.7 micrometer 2 in the weld metal. 2. The finer grained weld metal possesses high temperature strength and corrosion resistance superior to the conventional welds and oxidation resistance equivalent to the conventional welds. 3. The developed welding wire which can obtain refining weld metal increases the cracking resistance compared to commercial welding wire.
