The FSM Inspection Tool (FSM-IT) is a new technology for inspection and monitoring of metallic objects, pipes and vessels. The system is based upon the field proven FSMTM (Field Signature Method) a non-intrusive monitoring technique for monitoring internal corrosion, erosion or cracking. The FSM-IT allows inspection in areas where more conventional monitoring techniques (ultrasonic or intrusive probes) are either costly or difficult to apply. The significant advantages include the ability to inspect/monitor objects in a wide temperature range (-40 deg to 400 deg C); it is non-intrusive, not dependent of the operator; it measures changes in the actual pipe wall, allows remote intervention; and can be applied to any geometry or wall thickness maintaining a high sensitivity of down to five parts per thousand (0,5%) of wall thickness for general corrosion. This presentation describes the FSM-IT and results from a validation test to prove the quality of the measured data for weld root corrosion. The test led to the first off-shore installation, and field experience will be presented.
