This paper presented an ultrasonic-based automatic system developed for the inspection FPSO's hull. This system operates with several transducers simultaneously offering higher productivity to the work of inspection. The system works efficiently to detect flat discontinuities and to determine thinning by corrosion. It has been observed, however, that the level of detection of defects is associated with their sizes and the distance between signal acquisitions. A Monte Carlo Simulation is an alternative that can be utilized to define a reliability-based scan grid where the size of the defect to be detected is associated to a desired detection probability.
