The service life and reliability of DC power switches is heavily dependent on the degree of transfer of contact matter, which in turn depends on contact opening speed, contact material, and circuit load. The transition from 14 V DC to 42 V DC automotive electrical systems brings a change in current-breaking conditions and matter transfer behaviour. This paper discusses characterization of relay contact arcing and determination of the impact of arcing on material reliability under different electrical conditions at 14 V DC and 42 V DC. A similar method is applied to examine arcing phenomena on connector pin separation under various electrical and mechanical conditions.
