Gas velocity and temperature were measured probing the discharge holes of a gas generator with high temporal resolution. The pressure history was additionally recorded at a further discharge hole, in order to derive mass and energy flux needed for the numerical simulation of airbag-inflation behaviour. The vent characteristics of the gases ejecting from the gas generator were photographed with a high-speed camera to visualize the gas discharge and unravel its temporal evolution. Emission and absorption spectroscopy has been used to carry out time resolved temperature measurements. Gas temperature could only be measured spectroscopic 4 ms after ignition for values above 50 K, due to the low emission intensity and low absorption of the gases. The velocity measurement at the discharge hole was performed on flow-borne particles by means of laser-Doppler velocimeter. The velocity was measured in the centre of the discharge hole simultaneously with the temperature. Velocity discontinuities observed close to the discharge hole were attributed to the motion of a strong shock-front - the so called Mach-disk. The velocity curve without discontinuity together with the pressure and temperature measured at the discharge hole allows approximately the determination of mass and energy flux into the airbag.
