For meeting the growing demand of passenger protection systems and for enabling the application of new restraint actuators, Bosch started the development of precrash sensing. The Precrash Sensing (PS) system introduces the technology of surround sensing into the passenger protection systems field. It comprises three functionalities: preset (precrash setting of algorithmic thresholds), prefire (precrash firing of reversible restraints), and preact (precrash engagement of active safety devices). This paper describes the preset and prefire functionality for frontal precrash sensing. The main objective of the functionality preset is to reduce the risk or grade of injury in the case of crash by optimized deployment of restraint systems. Besides stiffness and mass of the own car, the crash severity depends on closing velocity, barrier stiffness and barrier mass. By means of radar sensing it becomes possible to measure the closing velocity independently and before the first contact. The closing velocity is now used as an additional input to the airbag algorithm and in combination with the acceleration signals the firing times of the pyrotechnical restraints are calculated. The aim of the functionality prefire is to use the knowledge about on oncoming crash for the activation of restraint systems in advance of a crash. The basic preset algorithm is described in detail. Deployment of belt tensioner, airbag 1st and 2nd stage is discussed. The properties of the algorithm are outlined. The properties of the prefire algorithm are described in detail as well.
