Audi Accident Research Unit (AARU) is the designation for an interdisciplinary research association between medicine, psychology and technology initiated by Audi AG. The objective of Audi is to further improve active and passive safety of Audi vehicles by analysis of real accidents involving Audi vehicles. The data collection of AARU starts immediately after the accidents is reported by the Bavarian police. If the accident location is nearby, and the involved persons and the accident vehicle are still at the site, a member of the medical team immediately visits the location and performs a first documentation of the facts. The following day a data collection by all teams is performed. Only after complete understanding of every single accident detail data are compiled and anonymously stored in a databank. Medical, psychological and technical data collection are described in this article. The AARU is integrated into the development process at Audi AG. By means of analysis of the individual cases and statistical evaluations of accident data banks, the AARU provides potential for future vehicle development. The AARU brand accident research provides the possibility of using a higher number of accident vehicle which are equipped with the side airbag systems applied by Audi. Two examples are described: Oncoming traffic accident in a right hand bend; oncoming traffic accident after an avoidance manoeuvre.
