The Automated Multilevel Substructuring (AMLS) Software has already had an enormous impact on vibration analysis of automobiles in the first year of its availability. It has dramatically increased the size of FE models that could be used for vibration analysis and the frequency range that could be handled within acceptable job turnaround times. It has also reduced the cost of the analysis by making it possible to use computer hardware that is much less expensive than supercomputers. However, as the frequency range that could be addressed has increased, the number of modes involved in the analysis has increased greatly. This has caused two components oft he analysis procedure to dominate the others in analyses at higher frequencies. One of these is the solution of a reduced eigenvalue problem for approximations of global eigenpairs, and the other is the solution for the responses of the global modes when damping is modeled realistically. This paper presents the performance of two new algorithms for these parts of vehicle vibration analysis with AMLS. Unfortunately, these algorithms could not be presented in any detail because they are in the process of being patented. However, both of them are shown to deliver enormous reductions in the time required for analysis to very high frequencies. When these improvements are incorporated into the AMLS vibration analysis capability, Problems that were not considered tractable one year ago can be handled easily overnight on very inexpensive computer hardware.
