Effect Pigments may be added to multi-layer extruded films to increase the reflectivity, chroma and dimension of zero paint films. Special effect pigments such as metal oxide coated micas and metal oxide coated borosilicate flakes are added to plastic films to create unique end-products that exhibit color flop and travel as well as providing an interference or rainbow effect. This paper will demonstrate how the addition of these effect pigments will enhance the visual effects of both the film and its surface and also improve processing conditions of the extrudate with improved rheology, heat transfer and throughput. Further, this paper will demonstrate that the addition of effect pigments will help produce high quality multi-layer films utilizing materials that are essential for automotive manufacturers who are interested in obtaining a Class A Finish in a zero paint application. Through the efforts of many plastic formulators, resin and pigment manufacturers and processing equipment companies, it is now possible to create an automobile out of plastic or plastic alloys that has the appearance of a liquid paint metal vehicle. It is even possible to create a finish that is superior to a liquid paint coating in both appearance and durability. Further, the use of injection molded resins allows the manufacturer to create a vehicle of fluid shapes that were not currently possible with welded steel pieces. With comparatively minor retooling, automobile shapes and colors can be changed rapidly, allowing for mass customization of the final product.
