Material selection of gate valves for oilfield applications is difficult and complicated. With environments becoming more and more aggressive, material failure is costly and could have environmental implications. Special attention is needed in selecting materials for subsea applications. Although industry standards such NAGE and API have established some limits on material use, the primary responsibility is still left up to the end user and the equipment supplier. Proper attention is required on all areas of the material selection process. This includes selecting proper body material to meet the required life of the project to the small details required of cap screws. Selecting the main value component is not an issue as extensive history is available in such areas both on surface and subsea equipment. Special attention is required on the details. This includes appropriate control in areas of galvanic, pitting and crevice corrosion. This is as a result of the equipment being completely immersed in an electrolyte. Other issues with subsea equipment is hydrogen embrittlement (HE) of materials from the GP system. All such details must be taken into account to insure correct selection process.
